Protection and Fairness

• Best effort flows may affect others:

  • especially when congestion-controlled flows (eg TCP) compete against non-congestion-controlled flows (eg UDP)
  • protection provides local isolation

• Fairness

  • local notion of fair meaning equal
  • commonly, the max-min fairness criteria
