Naming Computers

• Need a way to locate services; easier for humans than numbers

• Flat Name Space:

  • every computer has unstructured name
  • must coordinate not to stomp on eachother
  • examples: ucbvax, sdcsvax, sri-nic
  • didn’t scale very well
